Prevention Thoughts: LAC 109, MIN 107

Your recap is above, and the Preventions will follow…

Over usage of starters: check.
Fast paced team: double check.
Plagued bench players: triple check.
Vengeance: checks of infinity.

Coming off a satisfying spell-breaking victory which saw Minnesota snap a seven season long, 22-game losing streak caused by none other than the Clipper’s Big Brother Los Angeles Lakers, the Timberwolves returned to Staples Center to settle another score: a current 5-game losing streak at the thieving hands of Chris Paul and the new and improved Clippers. Like Los Angeles, Minnesota is a very fast basketball team (3rd place in pace, tied with Golden State) who can score in bunches, not to mention sharing the Clipper’s singular characteristic of a diseased bench that can’t score or defend on their own unless the starters are on the court to aid them. The Wolves may be a better defensive team in the league (7th in that category), but the defensive rebounding rate (19th) can be a cause for concern – not that they’re bad, but the Clippers are ahead of them in both defensive rate (18th) and total rebounding rate (13th).

Fast paced teams like the Wolves can mean slim opportunities for the defense to prevent extra possessions. The Wolves caused more possession preventions than the Clippers did thanks to their offensive rebounding. The fourth quarter featured a peculiar moment in the game which saw the likes of Derrick Williams, Alexey Shved and Kevin Love each missing a 3. Dante Cunningham, Kevin Love and J.J. Barea dug the boards and spotted gold in the guise of an offensive rebound, each, preventing THREE Clipper possessions in total. Anytime the offense collects an offensive rebound following a missed 3, the 3-pointer is automatically considered an open shot, whether it is contested or not.

Speaking of open shots, the Clippers allowed eleven open 3’s out of eighteen missed attempts for an open percentage of 61.1%. Open 3’s make charts like this possible and, at often times, very necessary:

Doc Rivers conceded to the notion that the Clipper’s ability to score in a Phoenix Suns-styled offense makes them prone to a lot of open shots, and they will have to live by that. The Clippers did allow Minnesota to make 41.7% of their field goals. That’s what Preventions are here for, Doc.
